Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in San Diego, California. Accessible transfer to hotel. Get acquainted/re-acquainted dinner. Stay 4 nights.
Day 2
We’ll begin with Cabrillo National Monument, commemorating both Cabrillo’s explorations in 1543 and the historic lighthouse. Spectacular views of the city, harbor and ocean.
Then, we tour the USS Midway, America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier, with self-guiding audio tour. Finally, step back in time at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, 12 acres commemorating the first permanent settlement in California. Many restored historic, territorial buildings in addition to shops and restaurants.
Day 3
We’ll drive to Escondido, where we find the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park, home to more than 3,200 animals, most of which roam freely over expanses of land that simulate their natural habitats.
Day 4
Begin with Sea World today, a 189-acre marine adventure park with shows, close-up animal encounters and marine life attractions. Later, time permitting, some harbor touring.
Day 5
Leave San Diego this morning, heading to Los Angeles. Our stop along the way is Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded in 1776 and famed for its gardens, fountains, architecture and the annual return of its swallows. Stay near LAX, 3 nights.
Day 6
We’re off to the Page Museum & the La Brea Tar Pits, among the world’s richest sources of ice-age fossils. Then, on to the J. Paul Getty Museum. An architectural masterpiece, it contains a wonderful, priceless art collection by such masters as Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir and Cezanne.
Day 7
Hollywood! First, a Warner Brothers Studio Tour, showcasing facets of movie and television production. Then, stop at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, to see the footprints and handprints of many famous stars (and the imprints of John Wayne’s fist and Jimmy Durante’s nose!), and the “Walk of Fame” sidewalk, embedded with the handprints, footprints and names of stars from many decades. Farewell dinner.
