The venetian port and old town district of Chania are the main areas of interest for all visitors. Impressive architectural elements spanning multiple eras--starting from Minoan times and subject to multiple cultural influences, including Byzantine, Arabic, Venetian, Jewish, and Ottoman--adorn the picturesque port's streets, alleys and plazas. Massive dockyards and former powder-magazines are used today as cultural centers for a wide variety of events. They also host the Center of Mediterrenean Architecture. In the midst of the newer section of the city stands the Agora (market place) which has for years been an important outlet for traditional domestic products. 2. In the shadow of the White Mountains.
An impressive combination of hills, mountains, and sea are the hallmark of the northernwest section of the Chania prefecture. At Kolymbari, we find the historic Gonia monastery, which dates back to the 17th century, as well as the Orthodox Academy, world-wide home to cultural and scientific conferences. Kasteli was the port of the ancient mountaneous town of Polyrinia. Nowadays one can tour the site of Roman-era buildings, visit the local market, or have a relaxing stroll along the beach. Here you can enjoy a delicious traditional meal after swimming or choose from the many aquatic activities in the bay of Kissamos.
